<div itemprop="description">Francis Orison “Frank” Porter, <br>age 82, of Windsor/Brooklyn, <br>1934 ~ 2017 <br> <br>The family is saddened to announce the sudden passing of Frank Porter at his home at the Gladys Manning Retirement Community, on Saturday, April 1, 2017 with his wife by his side. <br> <br>Born on August 3, 1934, in Brooklyn, Hants Co., he was adopted into his family by his grandparents, Lorne and Hattie (Noiles) Porter. He was the last surviving member of the family. <br> <br>Surviving beside his wife of 58 years, Dolores (Hunter); children, John “Jack” (Michelle) Porter, Pickering, Ont.; Sara (Fredrick) Smysniuk, Sweets Corner; grandchildren: Allexandra and Olivia Porter; Russell, Mikayla and Jarid Smysniuk. <br> <br>Beside his parents; he was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Garnet, Victor, Merle, Carman Pemberton, Audrey Cochrane and Rita Porter (in childhood). <br> <br>Frank was a founding member of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department in 1962; serving as Deputy Chief for 10 years and Chief for 20 years. He was President of the Board of Trustees for 3 years and an active member of the Fire Department Auxiliary. A founding member of the Chief Fire Officers of Nova Scotia, member of Waverly Fire School, President of the Hants County Firefighters’ Association for 7 years, President of the Western Nova Scotia Firefighters’ Association for 7 years, honored by the Maritime Fire Chiefs’ Association for 35 years of membership and continued to be a member of the association. <br> <br> <br>Frank Porter has been volunteering for over 55 years. He joined Hants County, Branch No. 9, Royal Canadian Legion in 1973 and was made a life member in 2004. Chaired several committees and organized Remembrance Day services in Brooklyn for 38 years. Frank served as 1st Vice President, Chairman of the Personnel Committee, Chairman of the House and Property Committee, Past Chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee and Past Chairman of the Finance Committee. He continued to help out with bingo, banquets, color party and whatever else was asked of him. <br> <br>For his years of service to the community, he was awarded the following: Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal, 20 years Fire Service Medal and the 25 Year Fire Service Medal. Frank assisted with fundraising and building of the first Newport District Rink. He was an active member of Minor Hockey for 15 years, as both coach and Level 3 Referee. Frank was a member of the Newport Jolly Seniors Group and served on the finance committee dealing with Government in securing funds for seniors’ events. Frank was a member of the Hants County Seniors Games for 15 years. <br>Currently, Frank was a member of the Entertainment Committee at the Manning Retirement Home and first vice chairman for 8 years. He has volunteered at Dykeland Lodge for 2 years calling bingo, helping at birthdays, selling 50/50 tickets for at least 3 times a week. He has played as Santa Claus for over 20 years for Sunday Schools, private groups, etc. <br> <br>In 1992, Frank was selected Volunteer of the Year for Hants County sponsored by the Brooklyn Fire Department. He then went on to represent Hants County as Provincial Volunteer of the Year. For a number of years, he was a member of the Brooklyn area Citizens on Patrol. <br> <br>Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, B0N 2T0, where the Hants County Branch #9 will hold a Legion tribute at 6:30 p.m. <br> <br>Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Civic Centre, 995 Highway 215, Brooklyn Fire Department, with the Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Cremation following with a private family burial at the Ste.
