HATCH......

Peter Calvin Hatch, R.C.M.P. (S.Sgt. ret'd), age 82, of Hantsport, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at Blomidon Court, Greenwich, Kings County, where he had resided since August.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to staff at Blomidon Court for their compassion and care during his stay there.

Born on May 25, 1933, in Red Head Cove, Newfoundland, Peter was the son of the late Nicholas and Johanna (Duggan) Hatch.

He began his career with the RCMP in 1951 in Ottawa at A Division. During the course of his career he held positions in Montreal, North Sydney, Halifax, Charlottetown, Burin, St. John’s, before retiring as Staff Sergeant, Sub Division NCO in the Corner Brook, NL Detachment. In 1961 Peter was selected for a course in Cryptography (codes and ciphers) with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals at their school in Kingston, Ontario. This set off his lifelong addiction to cryptograms and cryptoquotes which led him to buy just about every newspaper, magazine and book that published them.

After retirement he became an insurance underwriter with Occidental Life Insurance Company in Halifax, a career which he thoroughly enjoyed. On moving to the Annapolis Valley he settled into the field of security with Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company in Hantsport.

Peter had an intense love of history and engrossed himself in learning. He could not seem to absorb enough and would spend hours researching and reading. There wasn’t a subject he didn’t enthusiastically embrace. He was the quintessential storyteller and enjoyed spinning a good yarn. He thoroughly enjoyed keeping the Newfoundland language alive through his letters to the editor of local papers. He once described himself as a frustrated Bob Cratchit and hence became involved in various associations usually involving areas of finance.

His love of finance led him to positions as the founding President of the Mercy Convent School PTA, St. John’s (the first PTA in the Catholic School System in NL), Secretary/Treasurer and later President of St. Bonaventure’s College Men’s Association, St. John’s, member of the Finance Committee Parish Councils St. John’s, Corner Brook, NL and Windsor, NS and Treasurer of the Orchard Valley Branch of the Federal Superannuates National Association, Kentville, NS for almost 20 years. Peter was also a proud member of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program with Canada Revenue Agency, assisting seniors and persons in need with tax returns and related matters.

He is survived by his son, John William Hatch, Gaspereau Valley, Wolfville; his daughter, Janet Harnum and son-in-law, Robert Harnum, Kentville; grandsons, Sullivan Peter Harnum and Mackenzie Coyote Harnum, at home; a sister, Joan Marie McNaul, Toronto, Ontario; and special cousin Annie Broderick, St. John’s

Besides his parents, Nicholas and Johanna (Duggan) Hatch; he was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, the former Stella Marie Hines (1996); his daughter, Sharon Anne Hatch (2004); brother, William Hatch (1980) of Toronto, Ontario.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2016, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 339 King Street, Windsor, with the Rev. Father John MacPherson officiating.

Arrangement are under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home (902-798-2232), 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, NS, B0N 2T0.

Family flowers only, donations in memory of Peter may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or to the Children's Wish Foundation.

To add your condolences, click on contribute at, www.lindsaysfuneralhome.com.

To say Dad had a love of all things Newfoundland would be an understatement and he will once again be reunited with his beloved province in the Spring.

“ Fair Winds and Long May Your Big Jib Draw ”
