<div itemprop="description">BARKHOUSE-MacKEEN...... <br /> <br />Cynthia Doreen Barkhouse-MacKeen, BN, MSN, RN, CNS <br /> <br />It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Cynthia Doreen Barkhouse-MacKeen, age 56, of Bedford, on Saturday, February 1st, 2014, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. <br /> <br />Born on August 19th, 1957, in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of Doreen (Densmore) Barkhouse, Windsor, and the late Gilbert &ldquo;Buddy&rdquo; Barkhouse. <br /> <br />Cynthia graduated from Windsor Regional High School (1975); Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing (1979); received her Bachelor of Nursing from Dalhousie University (1984); Masters in Nursing, as a clinical nurse specialist and a focus in rehabilitation and neurological nursing from Texas Womans University (1998). <br /> <br />Cynthia worked at the Victoria General Hospital 4A as a staff nurse, then at the N.S. Rehabilitation Centre, as a staff nurse and nurse educator. <br /> <br />While in Houston, Texas, 1993-99, she worked at TIRR (The Institute of Rehabilition &amp; Research) as the brain injury program educator, involved with Interprofessional Health Education. In 2000, she went to work at Dalhousie School of Nursing as a Lecturer and Clinical Instructor and in her second year she was co-ordinator until September 2013, when she became an Assistant Professor. <br /> <br />Cynthia received many awards in her life. She was honoured to receive the Teacher Appreciation Award of the 2013 Graduating class of Dalhousie University School of Nursing. She was recipient of the Faculty of Health Professions Teaching Excellence Award and co-recipient of year 2, Faculty Teaching Award, School of Nursing, Dalhousie University. <br /> <br />Cynthia is survived by her husband John, Bedford; daughter, Jessica, Bedford; mother, Doreen, Windsor; sister, Natalie Reading, Windsor; niece, Ashley Reading and nephew, Joel Reading; mother-inlaw, Christina MacKeen, Bedford; sisters-in-law, Cathy (Alan) Streatch and family, Musquodoboit; Kim (Bill) Andrews and Family, Quispamsis, New Brunswick; also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as extended MacKeen family. <br /> <br />She was predeceased by her father, Gilbert (2010); sister, Suzanne &ldquo;Lynn&rdquo; (1973); father-in-law, Jack MacKeen. <br /> <br />Visitations will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, in Lindsay&rsquo;s Windsor Funeral Home, (902-798-2232), 194 King Street, Windsor. <br /> <br />Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2014, in the Windsor United Church, 613 King Street, Windsor, with the Rev. Gloria Churchill and the Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. Cremation to follow, with interment to be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor, at a later date. <br /> <br />Donations in memory of Cynthia may be made to the V.O.N.; the Palliative Care Unit (Hants Community Hospital) or to a charity of one&rsquo;s choice. <br /> <br />To add your condolences, click on Contribute. <br /> <br /> <br /></div>
